Each year Toronto Hospice has a "Remember and Celebrate" event at a local historic site. Each of the clients they've helped for the past few years on is named in a ceremony filled with music, flowers and kind recollections. It's a nice time, with candles. Occasionally sad. Last fall they planted bulbs at said venue as part of their relationship with the historic board and such. Last fall an old friend - who I hadn't seen in years - died. In her life her husband/friend (who had also been a great friend of mine) had given her daffodils each spring. When he died, friends made sure she got her daffodils the following spring. Perhaps they did later as well, I don't know, but when I heard of her death I hit a gardening centre with a crazy 3 for 1 sale on bulbs and bought them out. Grief shopping - not recommended. Anywho, I actually don't have space for these so was relieved when I heard of TH's venture and donated most of the daffodils.
A few weeks ago, I had a wedding at the Enoch Turner Schoolhouse. I love the place for it's history and attention to detail. I love it for it's central location and the fact that it has the second best acoustics in the city. And now I love it for the sunny yellow reminders of hope, continuance and the great circle that that life is which surround it. With thanks to Toronto Hospice, and in remembrance of Suzanne:
